General Tips for Making Phone Calls within Australia 

Don’t forget to dial the 0 before area codes for domestic long distance calls. Also, keep in mind the time differences between Australia’s regions!

Mobile phone calls within Australia

Cellular phone numbers in Australia have 8 digits but must be preceded by a 4, the cellular prefix that takes the place of area codes.

You must include the preliminary 0 for domestic long distance calls. For a call to an Australian cell phone from within Australia, dial 0, the area code, and the local subscriber number. e.g. 0-4-xxxx-xxxx.

Receiving calls from abroad

For international calls to Australian land line or cellular line, dial the international access code, country code, 1-digit area or cellular code, and 8-digit local subscriber number. e.g. For a call to Melbourne from the U.S., dial 011-61-3-xxxx-xxxx. For a call to an Australian cell phone from the U.S., dial 011-61-4-xxxx-xxxx.

Other calls and numbers

Keep in mind that you only need to dial the 8-digit subscriber number for local calls between land lines. e.g. xxxx-xxxx.

Numbers beginning with 1800 are free in Australia.

New toll-free numbers known as “phonewords” are also being introduced. These numbers will begin with the prefixes 13, 1300, and 1800.

Note that calls to toll-free numbers in other countries will carry the same charge as any international call.

Certain toll-free numbers are reserved for public services in Australia.

Tips for Calling Internationally from Australia

For international calls from Australia, dial the country’s international access code, 0011, followed by the country code of the country you are calling (the U.S. and Canada use 1), area code, and local subscriber number. e.g. For a call to the U.S. from Australia, dial 0011-1-xxx-xxx-xxxx. 

Public telephones in Australia accept coins. A brief local call costs about 38¢, and many public phones also accept credit cards. Purchase calling cards for the best bargains. Avoid making calls from hotel rooms; they tend to be pricey.

Internet access is plentiful across Australia. Even the smallest towns usually have at least one cyber cafe or coin-operated Internet machine.
