South Korea’s telecommunications system rapidly developed during the 1980s and 1990s.  The country now has a technologically advanced system with over 26.6 million land lines and over 40 million cellular lines in use.

All embassies are located in Seoul. The U.S. Embassy is located at 82 Sejongno, Chongno-gu (tel: +82-2 397-4114, Monday through Friday, 8:30 am to 5 pm).  The British Embassy can be found at 4 Chong-dong, Chung-gu (tel: +82-2 735-7341/3, Monday to Friday, 9 am. to 12:30 pm and 1:30 to 5:30 pm).  The Canadian Embassy is at Kolon BD, 45 p.m. Mugyo-dong, Chung-gu (tel: +82-2 3455-6000, Monday to Friday, 8:30 to 11:45 am and 12:45 to 4:30 pm).   The Australian Embassy is located at 19th Fl., Kyobo BD, Chongno 1-ga, Chongno-gu (tel: +82-2 730-6490, Monday to Friday, 9 am to 12:30 pm and 1:30 to 5:30 pm).

Language:

Korean is the official language of South Korea.  English is currently taught in Korean public schools so many young people are proficient in the language. 

Climate:

South Korea has the coldest temperatures at its latitude so try to visit during the months from May to September.  For winter visitors, you can at least expect an abundance of blue skies. Rain can be heavy in July and can make hot days quite sticky and unpleasant.

  • Seoul is one of the world’s 10 largest cities.  Most of it was rebuilt in the 1950s after the Korean War.
  • Songnisan National Park offers many beautiful hiking trails as well as Beopjusa, one of the most magnificent temple sites in the country.
  • April and May are popular months for tourism in South Korean.  An influx of tourists can make bargains harder to find.
  • For travel between cities, try some of the country’s affordable and comfortable buses and trains.
  • Seoul has a number of “barefoot parks.”  These feature special walking paths with different rocks thought to have therapeutic qualities.
  • Jinhae hosts the popular Cherry Blossom Festival in early April.
  • Karaoke is a popular Korean pastime.  You may even find it on some tourist buses!
  • Kyoungbokgung is known as the “Palace of Shining Happiness.”  Located in Seoul, it is wonderful place to learn about traditional Korean culture.
  • The Korean language has been influenced by English in many ways.  In fact, some Koreans use the term “Konglish” to describe a mixture of the two.  Common Konglish terms include “eye shopping” (window shopping) and “hand phone” (mobile phone).
  • South Korea’s most famous dish is kimchi, a fermented spicy vegetable (usually cabbage, radish, or cucumber).  It is served as a side with most meals.
  • Check out some of the country’s many bathhouses.  Many cities have both simple, traditional bathhouses and more luxurious, spa-like ones.
  • At traditional Korean restaurants, meat is cooked in the center of the table. Once cooked, it is wrapped in lettuce leaves with rice, garlic, and seasonings.
  • Public transportation is a great way to get around Seoul.  Don’t worry—station names are printed in English on most maps. 
  • Contemporary South Korean culture is strongly influenced by technology.  The country has the highest rates of high-speed home Internet access in the world; about 60% of homes are equipped with high-speed connections.
