Instructions for Calling to Cities within Germany

It’s important to remember that you must include a 0 before any area code if you are calling within Germany. Berlin uses the (0)30 area code, so for a call to Berlin from another Germany city dial 030-xxx-xxxx or 030-xxxx-xxxx. If calling Berlin from abroad, drop that first 0 and dial 011-49-30-xxx-xxxx or 011-49-30-xxxx-xxxx. The longer the area code is, the shorter the local telephone number and vice versa. This all depends upon the population of the area and the scarcity of phone numbers. A major city like Berlin will have much longer local numbers and shorter area codes than a smaller town like Saal. When calling a number within your own area code, dial only the local number; you do not need to dial the area code.

Instructions for Calling to Cell Phones in Germany

Cell phones in Germany use the calling party pays (CPP) system. As you might guess, this means that the caller pays for the call. The area code required for calls to cell phones depends upon the provider. All codes that begin with (0)1 are not linked to particular geographic regions. Those that begin with (0)15, (0)16, and (0)17 are cell phones. Remember to include the first 0 if you are calling a cell phone from within Germany. e.g. 015-xxx-xxxx. Be sure to drop that first 0 if you are calling a German cell phone from abroad. e.g. 011-49-15-xxx-xxxx.
